Whether you’re thinking of trying out some Qiaoguo or just showing your significant other some extra love, here are some ideas on how to celebrate Qixi and keep the rich heritage and tradition alive right here at World Square.
You may be noticing an extra skip in your step or the smell of roses lately and that can only mean one thing… It’s Chinese Valentine’s day!
Hopeless romantics and lovebirds unite as we celebrate The Qixi Festival. This festival falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month and is the most romantic of all traditional Chinese holidays. For those who have not yet heard, the legend behind Chinese Valentine’s Day revolves around two forbidden lovers, Zhinhu, a weaver girl and daughter of a powerful goddess, and Niulang, a humble cowherd, who were separated and only permitted to meet once a year at the Magpie bridge on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
Qixi Festival has been observed for over 2,000 years and for good reason. Traditionally, it is a day when women dress up in Hanfu – a traditional Chinese clothing – and spend the day offering tea, wine, flowers, and various fruits to pray to Zhinu for wisdom and to grant their wishes. At night, women would also gather around and compete with each other on threading a needle. A popular dish that is cooked and eaten during Qixi is the Qiaoguo, a fried thin pastry of different shapes, made with oil, flour, sugar, and honey. People believe that by eating Qiaoguo, it will help reunite the couple on the Magpie Bridge.
These days, only a few of these customs remain, and it’s become a time to celebrate the star-crossed lovers with grand romantic gestures, giving each other gifts and flowers, and going on dates. Whether you’re thinking of trying out some Qiaoguo or just showing your significant other some extra love, here are some ideas on how to celebrate Qixi and keep the rich heritage and tradition alive right here at World Square.
