World Square is fast becoming a hub for art and creative displays in Sydney’s CBD!
A variety of spots around the Square becoming a canvas for a range of artistic endeavours from an array of artists.
The artworks appear in a variety of unexpected places, from lift wells to staircases inspiring shoppers to pause and appreciate their changing surrounds. They also make for great selfie opportunities and a chance to share the works of some aspiring – and inspiring – artists. Melbourne-based Eddie Balic is one such artist. Eddie, from Creative Features, creates motion, emotion and colour-explosive portraits, wall murals and abstracts using mixed mediums. Eddie’s hand-painted skyline – Morning, Noon and Lights – for example, was inspired by his first visit to World Square and reflects the cultural diversity that exists in Sydney.
Eddie was also commissioned to create an artwork for World Square’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival in 2019. He unveiled Utsukushii, which means ‘beautiful’ in Japanese, and is inspired by Japanese pop-cultural themes and the cherry blossom motif. This mural lives on in Liverpool Lane, a hidden destination among the global cuisine of World Square.
Other works which have become a talking point include two works, both called Untitled by A Friend of Mine, a design and brand development studio that explores constraints with consideration, solve problems with creativity and always find ways to engage and surprise.
In 2018, A Friend of Mine collaborated with World Square and 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art to develop a series of special new artworks that speak to World Square’s community and creativity. The first, a bold, black and white mural, references Asian characters and calligraphic brush-strokes, reflecting the dynamic and diverse local community that World Square is part of.
The second, a work of striking geometric patterns and shapes, introduced Asian characters interwoven into the mural in an abstracted and subtle way – an interesting hidden element to be spotted.
They are just a few of the artistic installations you can expect to see at World Square, and with the appointment of visual artist, fashion designer, author and radio host Claudia Chan Shaw as World Square’s Cultural & Artistic Ambassador, expect to see much much more.
